About the Program

The music class at Thrive is facilitated by a board-certified Music Therapist. Music education concepts are used as a framework to determine interventions that target self-management, social/emotional, and music-based goals. Music therapy uses the body’s psychological response to music and can often address goals in an efficient way due to music creating new neural pathways between brain hemispheres. Our upper academics classes do music ensembles targeting social skills including a boomwhacker choir, a mixed ensemble containing ukuleles, boomwhackers, bells, drums, and vocals, and a rock band. In music we use a token economy in which students can earn free time on an instrument of their choice promoting direction following and using music exploration as a reinforcer.
